Perpindahan ini termasuk besaran vektor, sehingga arah sangat diperhitungkan. Misalnya, suatu partikel bergerak ke kiri 5 satuan, lalu kembali ke kanan 6 satuan, maka perpindahan partikelnya bisa dinyatakan dalam dua kondisi, yaitu bergerak ke kiri bertanda negatif dan bergerak ke kanan bertanda positif, sehingga perpindahannya adalah -5 + 6 = 1 satuan.
